Australian Gymnastics Championships 2022

Australian Gymnastics Championships (AGC) was held from the 10th of May through to the 26th of May. Australia’s best gymnasts from all six gymnastics disciplines (Women’s Artistic, Men’s Artistic, Trampoline, Rhythmic, Acrobatics and Aerobics) converged on the Gold Coast to vie for a place on top of the podium and the chance to be crowned Australian Champion for their level and gymsport.

In order to be eligible to compete at the AGC, gymnasts must meet certain requirements for their gymsport, reach a qualifying score at one or multiple events sanctioned by their state gymnastics association and then be selected and invited to compete and represent their state. It is a huge honour to be selected to represent Tasmania on the biggest stage of Australian gymnastics. Hobart Gymnastics Academy had four athletes/coaches achieve this honour: Hayley D, Kobi, Kiera and Hayley W.

The two weeks of competition kicked off with Trampoline, Rhythmic, Acrobatics and Aerobics. Kiera and Hayley W were up first in the tumbling section of the competition (tumbling falls under the umbrella of trampoline). Kiera competing in Level 6 and Hayley in Level 7.

This year was Kiera’s first National Championships. In a tight field with only 0.9 separating the top 9, Kiera competed extremely well and finished in 17th position. Well done Kiera!

It was Hayley W’s second time competing at AGC, moving up a level from last year from Level 6 to Level 7. Battling injury, Hayley kept her nerve and competed beautifully, finishing in 12th position. Congratulations Hayley!

The second week of competition saw Women’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics take centre stage. HGA coach Kobi competed in the Men’s Level 8 Open division and HGA coach/athlete Hayley D competed in the Women’s Level 8 15 & Over division.

Kobi, now an experienced competitor at national championships, hit the ground running on day one of competition and qualified for finals where he finished 4th on Floor and 17th all around (two places higher than his qualifying). Amazing work Kobi!

2022 AGC was Hayley D’s first experience at national championships. Hayley competed strongly on day 1 and made it through to finals. Hayley finished in 10th position in the all-around competition, an awesome effort, well done Hayley!

Hobart Gymnastics Academy would like to extend a huge congratulations to these athletes on their incredible achievements, we are all very proud of you, you are an inspiration to our next generation of gymnasts and we cannot wait to see where you go next!
